BIM is a collection of data, or an object, that contains Building Information Modeling. But, there’s much more to BIM than that.
BIM describes each product or component of a product in 2D or 3D. BIM data can also include U-values, dimensions, environmental and sustainability information, along with brand information such as logos and product names.
Together, these pieces of data define the geometries and physical characteristics of each product, so you can place it in your design just as you would place the product or component itself in real life.
Fixed parameters for reliable design
There are two main types of families:
- Component – building products that are fixed geometrical shapes such as windows and doors
- Layered – building products without a fixed shape or size such as carpets, roofs, walls and ceilings
The main parameters of each family are fixed, just as they would be in real life. This allows designers, engineers and architects of door systems to be able to generate a project with almost identical specifications to the final result. Because of the technology, it is little surprise that BIM objects have been so widely adopted and that more manufacturers now produce their catalogs in BIM format.
